Social, Environmental & Economic Impacts
Earthquakes have
many social, environmental and economic impacts that have short term and long
term effects on the place directly impacted, the country as a whole and even
the world.
Examples of the impacts that can occur are:
Social:
Loss of Lives
Injuries
Diseases
Loss of Housing -homelessness
Interruption of transport and communication
Environmental:
Lead to other disasters; floods, landslides, fires, tsunamis, avalanches, mudslides and the eruption of volcanoes
Damage to water pipes – contamination of water sources
Damage of buildings, homes, infrastructure etc
Damage to habitats of animals – death of animals
Economic:
Cost of repairs
Damage to businesses
Upset to trade, import and export
The 1989, Newcastle Earthquake had many social, environmental and economic impacts. These impacts are still affecting the city of Newcastle today, 30 years on. During the quake 35,000 homes were destroyed- displacing 1000 people. Historical buildings were decimated and businesses destroyed. In total 50,000 buildings were damaged and 300 had to be demolished. Over 160 people were injured and hospitalised and 13 lives were lost, between the quake and New Years Eve of 1989. There was over 4 billion dollars worth of damage. This Earthquake affected Newcastle, like no one thought was possible.
