What is an Earthquake? How are they measured?
An
earthquake is a sudden shaking and vibration of the earth’s surface caused by movements
below from a sudden release of energy in the earth’s crust that create seismic
waves.
Earthquakes are measured using a seismograph which records the amplitude of the seismic waves. A formula is then applied to these which convert them to fit a magnitude scale - which is a measurement of the energy released by an earthquake.
